My prayers are with you Lydia and your family for Chester. I am sure you are beside yourself with worry. Take comfort in the fact that your friends and classmates are here for you. I think everyone can relate to their time around Chester. He is a great guy, funny and just a joy to be around. He really beat the odds when he and my brother Bob were in that car accident in high school. Maybe by some miracle he can beat the odds again. He is in my prayers.

Friend

Hi..I wasn't a classmate of his or even attended the same school as he did. I was one of his band members. Even though I wasn't one of his closest friends or family member, he was on of the very few who made me feel welcomed when I was barely joining the Navajo Nation. He was the one that helped me smile while i sat alone debating whether i had made the right choice coming on this trip (Ceremonial Rehearsal). He taught me to appreciate my gift as a saxophone player. He was the one that told me it was ok to be different and it was ok if i wasn't the same as the other kids in the Navajo Nation Band. He taught me so much in that little conversation and helped be appreciate so much. I thank him for that and I thank the relatives/friends who may have taught him to be the kind, generous person he was. I pray that he rests in peace and thank him for talking to me that day. God Bless his soul.

I am going to miss Chester and his stories about being employed by the railroad company and what band was like as a youngster. My deepest sympathies and condolences to his family. He was a great storyteller and our best baritone/sousaphone player in Navajo Nation/Tribal Band.

Chester will be missed in all of our families and especially among the Navajo Nation Band Family. His love of all music and talent was infectious and was always appreciated and shared by all. He left us suddenly but not without first giving everyone many fond, and often funny, memories. I will surely miss him as a friend, fellow musician and director, but am comforted by the thought that Chester is home. May he rest in peace and we shall see him again soon.

My condolences and prayers to the Hubbard families.

My heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Chester Hubbard. Chester was one of my closest friends in high school. Chester, Pat Martin, and I were the youngest kids in our class and used to take a lot of teasing about being the “babies”. I have so many great memories of Chester and all the crazy times we had together. We got into a lot of mischief, and could laugh and laugh about everyday happenings.

After college, I pretty much lost touch with my WR friends. Chester and Claudia were the two classmates who took the time to find me, and helped me reconnect with my WRHS family. I will always be grateful to them for their continued friendship.

Chester kept in close contact with me throughout all these years. Several years ago he sent me the greatest birthday present. He had a disc jockey make a CD for me with songs that were popular when we were in high school. He also had the DJ personalize the CD for me. The DJ would introduce each song with a memory of a fun time that Chester and I had shared. It is a priceless gift, as was his friendship.

I am sending on these photos that remind me of happier days. These were taken at WRHS in 1968, just before our “Publications” class. We all used to crack up, because our teacher for the yearbook/newspaper would tell us EVERY SINGLE day, “You are the Seniors, and it is your responsibility to make sure you have a good yearbook. And, that 2nd hour class JUST MADE MINCEMEAT of the whole thing!” We knew that remark was coming every day and it would be all we could do, to keep a straight face and not laugh out loud.

Bill Clemens, Chester, Sharon Ashcroft, Tony Davis.

Tony Davis, Bill Clemens, and Chester Hubbard

As I most remember him….smiling, laughing at every situation.

My love and sympathy to everyone in Chester’s family.

To the family and extended family of Ch'izh;

Dear Ch段zh,

I spoke to Lydia the day before you passed and ask her to convey my farewell to you. My continued prayer is that, although you were already preparing for your new journey, she somehow was able to reach you and let you know my feelings before you proceeded.

I want to again reiterate my special friendship with you. It was soooo very special.

Since the reunion of 1992, I was the recipient of your very special Christmas cards, always a reminder of Window Rock, the Fort, and the Navajo Nation. These cards, once opened, always contained Christmas CONFETTI, which scattered everywhere. I'm sure it took two packages to complete this task.

I am proud to say that my scrapbook saves every card you ever sent, CONFETTI included.

After the 2003 reunion, I was the proud recipient of your numerous phone calls in addition to a continuation of cards & CONFETTI.

You were a tremendous support after the passing of my beloved husband, Keith. I offered to come to your bedside to return these favors, but was told it would be too late.

My prayer is that Lydia reached you with my thoughts and somehow your soul heard and it made YOU smile.

Ch段zh, please know that it just wasn't Christmas until your card arrived. I didn't receive one this past year and I let it slide. I regret that. I told you I was saving up the CONFETTI to bring it to some future reunion to shower YOU. If I thought it would have helped, I would have come to your bedside, and a SHOWER would have OCCURRED! Actually, I would never have parted with one morsel of this CONFETTI.

Well my dearest Ch'izh, it is now time to say GOODBYE.

I will miss all our conversations and laughs, but know that we will meet again someday. Will you please say hello to all the people we know.

Keep smiling.

We will meet again. Until then, my dear friend, watch over us from above.

You will always remain awesome!!!!

Hubbard Family;

Was sorry to hear the news of Chester's passing. I had not seen Chester in over forty years, but was able to have dinner with Him last year during the Tribal fair. His personality had not changed since the last time I saw Him in 65. A very warm, intelligent and funny guy. It is sad to have heard in the last few years of the passing of many of My friends from the class of 68. Time may pass, but memories of My time on the Rez, are fresh in My mind

My regards to the Hubbard family, and the many friends of Chester.

My dear little "brother" Ch'izh; You are now in your eternal home; it's the rest of us who are still remaining. . . and the sadness we feel in letting go. . .I remember and wish to repeat what you said to all of us musicians one year at our Navajo Nation Band Banquet. You said, "music can take you a long way. How many our age today are still on the sports courts, fields, etc.? not too many; however, knowing how to play an instrument can take one a far distance." You proved it, brother, and you were an encouraging leader in the band. You stepped into the 'big shoes' of your Hubbard family, in serving as former Navajo Nation Band Director. You served as a Section leader, chaperone, and friend to even the youngest in the band. A percentage of the WRHS family knew you in your young days; The rest of us had the privilege of standing alongside you and seeing you mature. Becoming a loving "dad", "uncle" to the bigger band family as well as your own family. You will always remain in our hearts as that special leader and friend. Farewell and until we meet again on the other side of the Jordan River. . .your big sister, Georgia.

As I sit here trying to compose this note to the family of Chizh, I am finding that there is so much I want to say. I will miss Chizh, he was a great friend and I had the honor of playing in the Baritone section of the Navajo Nation Band along side him. The Baritone section will never be the same without Chizh. I remember most the times we played during Christmas at the chapter houses, we had to sing carols...he knew all the words to the Carols and even the 2nd, 3rd and last verses. I cannot attend the funeral, but my prayers and thoughts will be with you, the Hubbard family during this time. There are so many memories...its hard to continue. I have so many tears falling that I'm afraid I might short-out my computer.

Bye Chizh, I'll miss you, I'll think of you every time we play "Old Comrades".

Love,
"Rindy" (Miranda Blatchford)'77

Making laughter and joy,
Music... the language of the universe
Was his voice.
Like a clairvoyant
He always knew our thoughts
And comforted us accordingly.
This will remain with me,
As well as so many others.
Have a joyous journey
My Brother, my friend.

Let's say this is 1972...
I believe Chester might have said something like this...
"If loving you is wrong, Are you willing to give of yourself...
To those who look up to you?
Well....I did..

If loving you was wrong, I didn't wanna be right...
Was I wrong to hold on to the best thing I had?
Well Honey..that was you...My WRScouts Family!!!!!!"
