I attended Gallup High my Sophomore and Junior
years, and Karen Krause attended Gallup her Sophomore year and went out of
state her Junior year. We both returned to WRHS for our Senior year.
Our class was the first to have attended all four
years at WRHS, so we thought of ourselves as the first "real" graduating
class! I'm sure those who graduated before us would not agree.
One memory is that we did not have a gym--the one
that was built for the school couldn't be used for a gym because of problems
with the flooring that presented a safety hazard. So we had to go off site
for our practices and we played in the Civic Center. No shower facilities
were available!
A lot of us served as ushers for the Civic
Center--I know that is noted in the history. I actually still have my
"uniform" which is a traditional Navajo dress, white satin tiered skirt and
red velveteen top.
Another memory is that the home economics class
used to make cookies for the football team. We also had fun with fry-bread
and everyone will remember the disastrous Jell-O experiments! We had a
"fashion show" to model our creations from sewing.
The Class of '59 had a Navajo rug made my memory
is fuzzy as to who the weaver was--I think it was a relative of one of the
seniors as our gift to the school--it depicted the Scout image and was
displayed in the library. We earned most of the funds for it with a huge
carnival held in the cafeteria--a great success!
