Stanley Morgan
WRHS Class of 1971Funeral services for Stanley Elliot Morgan, 58, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Defiance. Deacon Joseph Gonsalves will officiate. Burial will be in Fort Defiance Community Cemetery. Visitation will be 9-10 a.m., Dec. 1, prior to services.
Morgan died Nov. 22, 2010, in Phoenix. He was born Sept. 30, 1952, in Fort Defiance, into the Water Edge People Clan for the Black Streak Forest People Clan. Morgan graduated from Window Rock High School in 1971. He attended Arizona Western College in Yuma. He was a self-employed auto mechanic. His hobbies included repairing cars for friends and family.
Survivors included his brothers, Wilbert Morgan, Anthony Morgan, William Morgan Jr., Russell Morgan, Clifton Morgan; sisters, Maxine M. Bahe, Cynthia Morgan, Delphine M. Kewanwytewa. Morgan was preceded in death by his parents, William and Desbah Morgan; sister, Dorothea Johnson; one granddaughter. Pallbearers will be Jon Hunt, Lyle Kee, Glen McLemore, Jeffery Morgan, Jeremy Morgan, Richard Morgan.

WRHS Class of 1967Peggy lost her battle with cancer Saturday Oct. 9. At her request, there will be no funeral or memorial service, she will be cremated. As legal permits can be obtained, her ashes will be scattered in the mountains around Santa Fe, NM.
There will be a church service conducted during regular Sunday services at Mr. Bill Brady Sr.'s Methodist Church in Ardmore, Oklahoma. The family requests NO flowers please. The family requests NO emails.

So tough; all this loss.
I still remember Peggy dancing with Bill, her brother, in Amahl and the Night Visitors. They were so involved in their performance, so simple and honest in movement and sincerely how they accomplished their shepherd dance and created a unison and a believability to the whole story.
Sadly enough, there was another loss from that same next door house to mine. It was also the residence of Reba Rumsey whom I have also lost as a dear friend. I can look at it though as a gift of friendships that I have been given..yet, I feel the loss as if a tear and a smile.
Oh my, getting older can be so lonely and I miss my friends wherever you all are.

A note to Bunkie Witten. I remember a few years after moving away from Window Rock I was watching the "Price is Right" game show for some reason and who should be picked as a contestant? Bunkie Witten! It was fun to see him again. I have often thought of all you at Window Rock High through the years and wonder how your lives have turned out. Funeral services for Edgar E. Dahozy, 57, will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 18, at family church Assembly of God. Kenneth Delaney will officiate. Burial will be in Rainbow Ridge, family plot.Dahozy died Sept. 15, 2010, in Gallup. He was born Dec. 5, 1951, in Fort Defiance, into the Folded Arms People Clan for the Salt People Clan.
Dahozy graduated in 1971 from Window Rock School. He was a United States Army Vietnam veteran and employed with the Navajo Nation Water Resources Department and and electrician.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Day of Hunters Point; son, William Dahozy of Hunters Point; daughters, Yolanda Allen of Kayenta, Desiraye Dahozy of Chinle, Larissa Dahozy of Hunters Point, Clarissa Dahozy of Hunters Point; brothers, Edison D. Dahozy, Victor Dahozy, both of Tohatchi, Herman G. Dahozy of Tse Bonito, Ellison G. Dahozy Jr. of Tohatchi; sisters, Ruthie Alexius, Ella Smith, Ertha Ahasteen, Loretta Bennett, Alberta Dahozy-Campos, all of Fort Defiance, Rosie D. Bryant of Window Rock; nine grandchildren.
Dahozy was preceded in death by his parents, Ellison Dahozy Sr., Frances Dahozy; grandparents, Tom D. Howard, Elizabeth Howard, William and Rose Dahozy.

Notah was born July 3, 1957, in Oceanside, Calif., into the Red Running Into the Water People Clan.
Notah graduated from Window Rock High School in 1976, New Mexico State University for water technology and Crownpoint Institute of Technology for culinary arts. He worked at Denny’s restaurant in St. Michaels. His hobbies included cooking, being outdoors, traveling.
Survivors include his brothers, Paul W. Notah of Window Rock, Louis C. Notah of Phoenix.
Notah was preceded in death by Francis Notah, Rhoda Notah, Larry Notah.
Pallbearers will be Foy Finley Jr., Nathan Etsitty, Brian Upshaw, Bobby Nez, Leon Yazzie, Stan Etsitty.

A rosary will be 6:30 p.m., tonight, July 8,at Rollie Mortuary.
Jones died July 6, 2010, in Fort Defiance. She was born Jan. 31, 1943, in Fort Defiance.
Jones had a bachelors of Education from Prescott College. She was retired from Window Rock School District #18 after 33 years. She loved being with family, especially her grandchildren.Survivors include her husband, Harold Jones of St. Michaels; son, Eldon Wayne Jones of Fort Defiance; daughters, Loretta A. Jones of St. Michaels, Mary Alice Best of Gallup; mother, Mary Ann Robbins of Fort Defiance; brothers, Benny Robbins Jr. of Albuquerque, Leonard Robbins of Fort Defiance, Stanley Robbins of Prescott; sisters, Victoria Birch of Fort Defiance, Marjorie Frame of Fort Defiance, Myrtle Hickson of Window Rock, Christine Hale of Deer Springs, Charlotte Damon of Window Rock; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

(Need help with the class year)Funeral services for Hoskie "Hoss" Bahe Bitsilly Jr., 50, were held June 7, 2010, at the Mary Mother of Mankind Catholic Church in St. Michaels, Ariz., with Gilbert Schneider officiating. Interment followed at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fort Defiance.
Hoskie was born Oct. 7, 1959, in Phoenix. His clan is Ta'neeszahnii (Tangle People Clan), born for Kinlichíi'nui (Redhouse Clan). His nali is Tsénjínkiní (Honeycombed Rock); his chei is Bear Ute Clan. He passed away June 2, 2010, in Gallup.
Hoskie graduated from Window Rock High School and attended various vocational training in carpentry, masonry and was a motorcycle mechanic. He was an Army veteran stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, specializing in engineering where he received his security clearance to escort military personnel.
His biggest and greatest passion was riding his Harley and taking part in the many bike rallies and memorial poker runs for friends and family. He enjoyed fishing, music, cookouts, and good company.
Surviving Hoskie are his brothers, Benjamin Bitsilly of Navajo, N.M., Jonathan Bitsilly of Mesa, Ariz., and Mickey Bitsilly of Navajo; and sisters, Sarah Bitsilly of Navajo and Barbara Crawford of Fort Defiance.
Hoskie is preceded in death by his parents, Hoskie and Grace Bitsilly of Navajo, and niece, Chelse R. Duffel of Window Rock.
Pallbearers were Nathan Crawford, Kallen Crawford, Jack Keams Jr., Hoskie Brown Jr., Barry Barber, and Lesley Barber.
Honorary pallbearers were Benjamin Bitsilly, Jonathan Bitsilly, Mickey Bitsilly, Michael Brown, Ronald Bitsilly, Arnold Bitsilly, and Ernie Bitsilly.

WRHS Class of 1977Funeral services for Phillip E. Stewart Jr., 51, will be held today, May 13, at the LDS Church in St. Michaels, Ariz. Burial will follow at the family plot in Red Lake, N.M.
Phillip was born Aug. 14, 1959, in Fort Defiance. His clan is Meadow People, born for Zuni. His nali is Bitterwater; chei is Water Edge People. He passed away in Albuquerque.
Phillip graduated from Window Rock High School in 1977 where he participated in wrestling, football and baseball. He received All-Conference Honorable Mention in 1977.
He then attended Navajo Community College, Arizona Western College and Mesa Community College. He worked with the Navajo Nation Bureau of Indian Affairs Roads in Gallup, Soil System Inc. in Phoenix, and was a certified asbestos worker with Spray Systems. At the time of his death, he worked with the Navajo Nation Historic Preservation Department.
He enjoyed playing baseball, football, fishing, archery, bowling, camping, pool (billiards) and spending time with his goofs.
Surviving Phillip is his mother, Sonya B. Stewart of Window Rock; sisters, Philene S. Herrera of Gallup, and Victoria Stewart of Mesa, Ariz.; and brother, Vernon S. Stewart of Window Rock.
Phillip is preceded in death by his father, Phillip E. Stewart Sr.; sister, Lynnette R. Stewart; and maternal and paternal grandparents.
Pallbearers will be Vernon Stewart, Eric Stewart, Darrell Stewart, Eugene Shurley, Gary Shurley and Dewayne Waseta.

To WRHS Alumni....
I am very sorry to hear about this sad news. Phil was a very close friend of mine during my High School Days at WRHS. He was a year ahead of me (Phil was in the Class of 77). He was extremely friendly and cheerful to everyone - we spent hours cracking jokes at school and before and after football practice. I don’t think I ever saw Phil get mad at anyone – with the exception of when he competed in sports – he was pretty serious during football practice and at games. I remember Phil as being a pretty darn good football player. He had quick feet and strong hands, he could shed his blocker and make the tackle on the quarterback or running back.
I remember in particular one play….we were playing Page at Home (in the Fall of 1976 - Phil's Senior Year). We were ahead 12 to Zero with about 30 seconds before the end of the first half. The quarterback for Page - Max Hamblin - went back to throw a bomb to a Page wide receiver (I think the wide receiver’s name was Jerry Duncan – but I could be wrong about that). At any rate - the wide receiver was way down field and he wide open for an easy touchdown - I thought for certain Hamblin was going to get the ball to him, just before he through the ball, Phil shed his blocker and sacked the quarterback who still had the ball - to end the first half of the football game. WRHS went on to win that game 12 to Zero.
Over the years I have thought a lot about Phil, and although we lost contact with each other shortly after high school – (I had not seen him since) - I always hoped that I would see him again.... my heart goes out to his family.

WRHS Class of 1966PEORIA, Ariz. - KJ was born Aug. 6, 1992, in Phoenix, to his mother, Tina Sorrell Bowen, and father, Keith Bowen. He grew up loved and cherished by his friends and family here in the Valley as well as relatives in southern California, and the Navajo Reservation.
KJ was very proud of his Navajo heritage, born to the Tséníjíkiní (Cliff Dwellers Clan), born for the Zhinii (African American). His maternal grandfather was Tl'aashchí'í (Red Cheek People Clan).
KJ was a proud Panther at Peoria High School, and had recently accepted a full-ride football scholarship to Glendale Community College. An outstanding athlete with impeccable work ethic, KJ competed in track and field and football. As a member of the Arizona Rising Suns Track & Field Club, he was a champion on the local, regional and national level.
In 2003, KJ received the Valley's Native American Recognition Days "Outstanding Native American Student of the Year Award." In 2008, KJ was awarded the Peoria HS Track and Field "Most Improved Athlete" Award, and the "Breakthrough Performance" Award. For his accomplishments during his senior year in football, KJ received the 2009 First Team All-Region 4A Kick Return Specialist, First Team All-Region 4A Wide Receiver, and Peoria HS Coach's Award.
KJ was baptized at First Institutional Baptist Church and took pride in participating in the children's choir and other youth activities. Just recently, KJ rededicated his life to Christ and was honored to be a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
On Monday, April 19, 2010, Keith "KJ" Donnell Bowen Jr. was called to his heavenly home and into the arms of our Almighty God. He was 17 years old.
He will be missed by many, including friends like Steven, De'saan, Jamal, Demetrius, TJ, Jeremy and AJ, his beautiful girlfriend Miranda, the Rising Suns Track Club, kids he grew up with like Bianca, James, Brittney and Serene, and of course, the family that adored him.
His mother, Tina Sorrell Bowen, said, "KJ was so easygoing, loved being around all the women in his family, and never got upset. Sometimes all the women in the family would visit too long, he'd get frustrated and say, "Mom, OK, OK, can we go?" But he always loved and hugged all of them.
His father, Keith Bowen, said, "Something I'll always think about when I think about my son is his heart and passion."
And to many of people, those that didn't even have the privilege of knowing him, KJ represented hope. The Arizona Republic newspaper created a tribute page where thousands of people have left comments.
KJ Bowen is survived by his mother Tina Joy Sorrell Bowen; sisters, Tameka Bowen and Savannah Martha Bowen in Peoria, Ariz.; his father, Keith Bowen in Mesa, Ariz.; his half-sister Savannah Marie Bowen in Fort Defiance; his maternal grandmother, Georgia Ashley in Window Rock; his maternal grandfather, Ben Sorrel Jr. in Manuelito, N.M.; his aunts, Sandra Sorrell and Robin Sorrell in Glendale, Ariz., Reshonda Lewis in Inglewood, Calif., and uncle Randolph Bowen and his wife Bridgett in Los Angeles, Calif.
KJ's mother's extended family includes grand aunt, Shirley Nez, and her children, Cheryl Nez Longie, Arron Nez and Michael Nez; grand aunt, Betty Showalter-Bizardi, and her children, Pam Showalter Conley, Rachel Showalter Claw and Dwayne Showalter; grand uncle, Wilford Ashley, and his children, Heidi Ashley, Garrett Ashley and Audrey Ashley.
KJ's father's extended family includes grand aunts, Augustine Perry, Dorothy Bennett, as well as grand uncles, Roy Johnson, Ivy Johnson and James Johnson. He loved his cousins, Ashley Moore and Marlon Moore, as well as Randall Bowen and Montel Horner.
Several family members preceded KJ in death, including maternal great-grandparents, William and Elsie Ashley; grand uncles, Rick Nez and Daniel Showalter Jr.; paternal grandmother, Julia Lewis; grand aunt, Thelma Swain; aunt and godmother, Laura Cain; and Peoria HS friends, Matthew Walton and Jamal Sutton.
A memorial fund has been set up to assist the family with expenses related to the car accident and funeral. Contributions can be made at any Wells Fargo branch to the "Keith KJ Bowen Jr. Memorial Fund".

Timothy was born Nov. 23, 1992, in Fort Defiance. His clan is Tli'zi'lhani, born for Nato'Dine'e. His nali is Tachine; chei is Ki'ya'anii. He passed away March 20, 2010, in Navajo, N.M.
Timothy attended Tse Ho Tso Middle School, Window Rock High School and Holbrook Seventh Day Adventist. His hobbies included listening to music, going to concerts, hanging out with friends and spending time with his family and his dog "Princess." He enjoyed collecting rocks, seashells, CDs, T-shirts, etc. He loved playing his guitar and had dreams of one day starting his own band.
Surviving Timothy is his parents, Regina Sandoval-Jackson and Melvin A. Jackson Sr.; sister, Melissa A. Jackson; and brother, Melvin A. Jackson Jr.

Burial will be on family land in Fort Defiance. Zuni died on February 18, 2010 in Gallup, New Mexico. He was born on January 22, 1946 in Fort Defiance. He was Bit'ahnii born for Tabaahi.

TEMPE, Ariz. - A memorial service for former Fort Defiance teacher Arline Hobson will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. at the Tempe Friends Meeting House (318 E. 15th St.) following her recent death in Tempe.Hobson, who taught elementary school in Fort Defiance for 11 years, will be buried Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery (3015 N. Oracle Road) in Tucson, where she lived for many years after leaving the Navajo Reservation.
Hobson's involvement with Native Americans started in 1940, when she and her husband Arthur began working with Osage Indians in Hominy, Okla., as representatives of Indiana Quakers. The end of World War II took them to the Navajo Nation, where they truly found their spiritual home.
However, Art's multiple sclerosis eventually forced the couple to move to Tucson. There Arline served as American Indian student advisor at the University of Arizona from 1969 until she retired in 1983.
Prior to the advisor's position she was a research associate with Marie Hughes in the Early Childhood Education Laboratory at the University of Arizona. She also taught four years at Safford Junior High School in a special immersion project.
Arline meanwhile nursed her husband, and also their youngest son Richard, whom they lost to brain cancer in 1984. In 1987 Art died, leaving Arline to seek new avenues of service.
The passage of time is not always generous. Aging is not usually easy. Arline should be remembered together with her husband and best friend Art for their commitment to service and to social justice, their joyful adventuring to remote parts of the West, and as young people for their love of dancing, something fondly remembered but denied to them in their later years.
Yet while they declined physically, their spiritual unity became more profound. Arline read and wrote prolifically. She was recognized among Quakers and her friends for her wise words, her sharp intellect, her oral ministry and her deeply spiritual writings.
She is survived by three children and their spouses, nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She also had a circle of those she held as part of her extended and spiritual family. All will miss her and pray that she is lifted into the light, perhaps into the loving embrace of her dance partner Arthur.

Dawes died Dec. 28, 2009, in Gallup. He was born July 29, 1944, in Fort Defiance, into the Water’s Edge People Clan for the Bitter Water People Clan.
Dawes graduated from Window Rock High School. He worked for Window Rock School District.
Survivors include his son, Lionel A. Dawes of Fort Defiance; daughter, Bernadine R. Letcher of Santa Fe; sisters, Vivian Milford of Fort Defiance, Arlene Thompson of Wingate; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Dawes was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Dawes, Polly Balone Dawes; brother, Irvin Dawes, Wayne Dawes; sister, Joan Keedah Dawes; son, Ivan Dawes.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Letcher, Chantee Letcher, Paul Diaz, Michael Dawes, Lionel Dawes, Marcellus Thompson.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Good Shepherd Mission, Fort Defiance, following services.

PassingAnother Scout, Wayne "Bunny" Nez passed away Sunday night (10-18-09) at his home in Fort Defiance. Wayne was a student of WRSD from the 1st. grade until he was graduated in 1966. He was employed by the Indian Health Service at the Ft. Defiance Hospital. More coming as details are available.

In response to my brothers classmates and friends who have expressed condolences and offered prayer for us, I sincerely thank you all. Me and my sister, Carol, and Eldon's 2 children are doing well as we prepare to have his funeral and burial tomorrow.
Eldon's' funeral will be at the Rehoboth Mission Chapel, east of Gallup, and he will be laid to rest in the Mission Cemetery at Rehoboth.

Gil was born May 15, 1954, in Ganado, Ariz. He passed away Oct. 13, 2009, in Fort Defiance.
Gil is a 1972 Window Rock High School graduate. He played football, basketball, baseball, and softball. He attended college at Navajo Community College and Sinte Gleska College in Rosebud, S.D. He received certificates in elementary education. His ambition was to be a sign language interpreter.
He worked as an asbestos abatement worker up until his death. His hobbies included playing softball, attending powwows, leatherwork, and wood carving.
Surviving Gil are his brothers, Mike Sandoval and Patrick Sandoval, and sister, Gena Sandoval-Jackson.
Gil is preceded in death by his parents, Rodger and Rita Sandoval; sisters, Sandi Sandoval and Birdie Sandoval-Williams; and son, Lee Scott.
Pallbearers will be Gary Lewis, Wally Peshlakai, Lenny Renolds, Martin Stevens, Ernest Taliman, and Cecil Yazza. Silver Creek Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

WRSD FacultyTahlequah, OK – Funeral services for Barbara Mae (Osler) Mann, age 88, will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday August 29, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. Allen Schneider officiating. Interment will follow at the Tahlequah City Cemetery with services provided by the Order of the Eastern Star. Services have been entrusted to the Hart Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Barbara Mae Mann was born on September 13, 1920 in Elsie, NE, the daughter of Frank and Bertha (Girton) Osler. Upon completing high school in 1937, Barbara decided to dedicate her life to teaching. Barbara attended Dana College in Blair, NE. On June 11th, 1938, Barbara married the love of her life, Edward Wilson Mann, in Nebraska. This union was blessed with three children, Gary, David, and Patricia. Barbara finished her teaching degree and certificate during the summers at NSU. Together, Barbara and Ed taught school in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona. Barbara taught for seventeen years on the Navajo reservation, most of that in the Window Rock School system, and five in Oklahoma. When she wasn’t working, Barbara was active in the Order of the Eastern Star from 1942 until 2004. She served in many aspects of the order including Worthy Matron several years. She and Ed loved to dance and were members of the Kuntry Kuzzins and Keenagers Clubs of Tahlequah. Traveling was another favorite pastime. Volunteering at Tahlequah Community Hospital, The Thrift Store, and the College Theatre were important to Barbara. She continued volunteering at the Clarksville, Texas Hospital until her passing. Barbara was a dedicated wife and mother who loved the time she spent with her family and friends. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Tahlequah, and was an active member of McKenzie Memorial United Methodist Church in Clarksville, Texas, at the time of her passing. Barbara went home to her Lord and Savior on Monday, August 24, 2009. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those preceding her in death include her parents, her husband Ed in 1998, two brothers, Frank Osler Jr., and Robert Osler, and one sister, Dorothy Fuehrer.
Those left to cherish her memory include her three children, Edward Gary Mann and wife Candy of Frisco, TX, David Mann and wife Susan of Tahlequah, OK, and daughter, Patricia (Mann) Cochran and husband Jim of Clarksville, TX. Her legacy lives on in her six grandchildren, Mike Mann of Lawrence, KS, Melinda Robinson and husband Roy of Northhampton, England, Amy Smith and husband Paul of Allen, TX, Dean Cochran and wife Lauren of Seattle, WA, Robert Mann of Tahlequah, OK, and Karen Mann of Tahlequah, OK. Barbara’s sister Kay Horn of Liberal, KS and brother John Osler and wife Joan of Imperial, NE. survive her along with her five great-grandchildren, Michael Mann and wife Katie of Gardner, KS, Matthew Mann of Lawrence, KS, Blake Robinson of Northampton, England, Ethan Smith of Allen, TX, Audrey Smith of Allen, TX as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.

Lafie Norman Bennett
Father of WRHS Alumnus; Barbara, Beverley, Terry and TomFuneral services for Lafie Norman Bennett, 84, will be held today, Aug. 20, at Our Lady of Mankind Catholic Church in St. Michaels, Ariz. Burial will follow at the veterans cemetery in Fort Defiance.
Lafie was born May 21, 1925, in Bayfield, Colo., to Milo Foster Bennett (Bilagaana) and Louise Watchman Brown Bennett (Tabaaha and Todichiinii). He passed away Aug. 17, 2009, in Fort Defiance.
Lafie enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 14, 1942, in headquarters battery 462nd parachutists field artillery of the 101st airborne division. He served in the Pacific Theater in World War II. He fought with courage and valor and was honorably discharged Dec. 26, 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal, American Campaign medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, World War II Victory medal, Philippine Liberation medal, Army Good Conduct medal, Marksman Weapons Qualification badge, Mortar bar, and Army Presidential Unit Citation, Silver Star, three bronze stars, and one bronze arrowhead. His tour of duty included more than 300 parachute jumps.
Lafie returned home to begin his civilian life as a farmer in Parker, Ariz., and working several years with the BIA, which took him all over the Southwest. He ended up choosing law enforcement as his lifetime career.
He served as a police officer for the Navajo Tribal Police in Fort Defiance. He then worked for the Pine Ridge South Dakota Police Department, the Grants Police Department, and was captain for the Shiprock Police Department, retiring as superintendent of police for the Navajo Nation Police in 1973 or 1974. He once served as a bodyguard for Robert Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey. He worked for the Labor Union in Arizona and United Nuclear in Church Rock as a site safety superintendent where he once again retired from the work force.
Lafie is survived by daughters, Beverly M. Sarmiento of Albuquerque, Teresa L. Bennett, Margaret J. Bennett of Fort Defiance, and Cecille P. Bennett-Luna of Belen, N.M.; sons, Darrell P. Bennett and Ernie Mike Bennett of Fort Defiance, Thomas A. Bennett of South Dakota, Robert L. Bennett of Tempe, Ariz., and Anthony Ashley of Gallup; and sisters, Marion McLemore of Window Rock, and Josephine Waddops of Dove Creek, Colo. He had 37 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.
Lafie is preceded in death by his father, Milo Bennett; mother, Louise Watchman Brown Bennett; daughter, Barbara Ann Norris; sisters, Francis Collins and Donna "Pinky" Reyes; brothers, Paul "Corky" Bennett and Wilford "Buddy" Bennett; and Edith Lynch Bennett and Helen Ashley.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Norris Jr., Kelly Ann Sarmiento, John Bennett, Thomas Milo Bennett, Allen Bennett, and Keith Toddy.

Survived by his 2nd wife Virginia, Mother Althea 103, son Gary, daughter Roxann Smith, 3 children by marriage, 10 grandchildren, brother Tom, Twin brother John, sisters Mary Hughes & Elaine Hansen. Proceeded in death by 1st wife, of 45 years, Ida Mai "Jackie",& Father. Graduate of ASU & NAU, 58 year member of Elks, served in Navy 1949 on the USS Bairoko CVE115. His career: teacher at Grand Canyon & Creighten Schools, administrator at Granado, Window Rock, Cave Creek, Ehrenberg and Kingman schools. Retirement years were spent in Cottonwood. WRHS Class of 1961Shirley, Betty, and I would like to share that our 1st cousin, Margaret Mae Taliwood-Holden passed away here at Fort Defiance Hospital, on Monday, August 3, 2009, due to a terminal illness. Margaret Mae was a member of the Class of 1961.
Funeral Services will be held at the Family Church in Fort Defiance, AZ. at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 5, 2009.
Burial will be at the Fort Defiance Cemetery following the services. Reception will be held at the Family Church grounds following the burial services.We know Margaret Mae had many friends when she was attending school at WRHS. When she was a junior, she was selected as Prom Queen in School year 1959-1960. She was a cheerleader during her senior year, member of the Pep Club, and member of the girls basketball team.
Friends and classmates are welcome to extend condolences to her daughter, Nizhoni Holden-Jacob, and her two sons, Larry Holden, Jr. and Michael Holden. Long died June 15, 2009, in Fort Defiance. She was born July 9, 1968, in Fort Defiance, into the Keeyonie People Clan for the Red Running Into the Water People Clan.
Long graduated for Window Rock High, 2 years UNM, 1 year Phoenix College. She was employed with Window rock School District for 14 years as a day care provider, security and with building and grounds and St. Michaels Special Education General Store.
Survivors include her sons, Steven Peshlakai, Kevin Milford; daughters, Stacey and Shelby Peshlakai; mother, Irene Long; sister, Erica Long; grandmother, Sarah Long.
Long was preceded in death by her father, David Long.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Nelson and Sarah Long residence 1 1/4 mile south of Fort Defiance Chapter House.

John Brown Jr.Funeral services for John Brown Jr., 88, Navajo Code Talker and Navajo Navajo Council delegate, will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at 10 a.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Stake Center, north of the Chinle IHS turnoff in Chinle.
A viewing will be at 9 a.m. A private burial will be at Brown's residence in Crystal, N.M. A post-burial reception will be held at the Crystal Chapter House.
John died Wednesday morning, May 20, 2009, at his home in Crystal. He was born Dec. 24, 1921, in a traditional hogan on the rim of Canyon De Chelly, into the Coyote Pass Clan for the Cliff Dwellers Clan.
John Brown Jr. is survived by his wife Loncie Polacca Brown and his children Dorothy Whilden, Preston Brown, Everette Brown, Virgil Brown and Frank Brown. His other children were the late Dale Brown and the late Ruth Ann McCombs. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John served in the U.S. Marine Corps as one of the renowned "original 29 Navajo Code Talkers" who developed the secret code, which was never deciphered by the Japanese and contributed to victory in the Pacific theater of World War II, saving the lives of thousands of GIs.
He was trained as a welder, journeyman and master carpenter and cabinetmaker. He was elected a Navajo Tribal Council delegate in 1962 and served until 1982. He also served as Crystal Chapter president for three terms. John also served the Navajo Nation as a traditional counselor for the Division of Social Services in Chinle.
John attended Navajo Community College, receiving an "A" in tribal government. He was fond of saying, "I have 4.0 at Navajo Community College."
John received the Congressional Gold Medal from President George W. Bush at the Capital rotunda on July 26, 2001.

Diné BureauWINDOW ROCK — John Brown Jr., one of the original 29 Code Talkers and a former Navajo Tribal councilman, died Wednesday morning. He was 88.
Flags have been ordered to be flown at half-staff by President Joe Shirley beginning Thursday in Brown’s honor.
A community meeting is scheduled Thursday at 6:30 at the Crystal Chapter House, the president’s office stated. Funeral arrangements are pending.
“Today, with sadness, we heard of the passing of Mr. John Brown Jr., one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers and one of the Navajo Nation’s great warriors,” Shirley said. “For so long, these brave men were the true unsung heroes of World War II, shielding their valiant accomplishments not only from the world but from their own families. The recognition and acknowledgment of their great feats came to them late in life but, for most, not too late. These heroes among us are now a very precious few, and we, as a nation, mourn their loss. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. John Brown Jr.”
Brown was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Chinle, near Canyon de Chelly to the late Nonabah Begay and the late John Brown. His mother died two years ago at the age of 102.
Brown attended Chinle Boarding School and graduated in 1940 from Albuquerque Indian School.
He was playing basketball when he heard about the bombing at Pearl Harbor, said his son Frank Brown.
“Sometime after that he remembered a number of Marine recruiters started talking to the young Navajo boys,” Frank Brown said.
Brown ended up going to Fort Wingate to the military installation.
His father remembered being signed up, sworn in and given his physical right then and there, Frank Brown said. Brown was immediately sent to Camp Pendleton for basic training.
“They weren’t allowed to go home to say goodbye to their family or write letters,” Frank Brown said.
“At some phase in their basic training, they were taken into one big room and a commandant told them they were all there for a special reason, and they were to devise a code in their language,” Frank Brown said. “The boys were left there in the room and they didn’t know what they heck to do. But they devised the code using names of animals and mammals to describe what would go with the alphabet.”
That code consisted of translations for 211 English words and was later expanded to 411 words, according to the president’s office. The code also included Navajo equivalents for the letters in the English alphabets so the Code Talkers could spell out names and locations. The code and the Code Talkers would help end World War II.
Navajo Code Talkers participated in battles in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. Frank Brown said his father served in four major battles at Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Guadalcanal.
The code was not declassified until 1968.
Brown was one of the original 29 Code Talkers presented with the Congressional Gold Medal by President George W. Bush on July 26, 2001 — 56 years following World War II.
At the presentation at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda in Washington, Brown said that it was an honor to be there representing his fellow distinguished Code Talkers.
“I enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942, not to become a Code Talker — that came later — but to defend the United States of America in the war against the Japanese emperor.
My mother was afraid for my safety, so my grandfather told her to take one of my shoes, place an arrowhead in it, take it to the mountain called Two Little Hills, and go there every day to pray that I would remain safe. Maybe she was more successful than she imagined because the Marine Corps soon had the Navajo Marines develop a secret code using our language. My comrade and I volunteered to become Navajo radio operators, or Code Talkers,” Brown said at the presentation.
“Our precious and sacred Navajo language was bestowed upon us, not a nation, but a holy people. Our language is older than the Constitution of the United States. I’m proud that, at this point in American history, our native language and the code will developed came to the aid of our country, saving American lives and helping the other U.S. armed forces ultimately to defeat the enemies.
“After the original 29 Code Talkers, there are just five of us that live today: Chester Nez, Lloyd Oliver, Allen Dale June, Joe Palmer and myself. We have seen much in our lives. We have experienced war and peace. We know the value of freedom and democracy that this great nation embodies. But our experience has also shown us how fragile these things can be and how we must stay ever vigilant to protect them, as Code Talkers, as Marines.
“We did our part to protect these values. It is my hope that our young people will carry on this honorable tradition as long as the grass shall grow and water shall flow,” Brown said.
President Richard Nixon awarded Navajo Code Talkers a special certificate in appreciation for their patriotism, resourcefulness and courage in 1971. They were included in the Bicentennial Parade in Washington July 4, 1976.
The U. S. Senate passed a bill declaring August 14 National Code Talkers Day in May 1982.
Frank Brown said his father lived a hard life, first training as a welder, then becoming a journeyman and master carpenter and cabinetmaker.
He was one of the veterans who returned to Navajo land and helped to build the Navajo government by serving as a member of the Navajo Tribal Council from 1962 to 1982. He also served three terms as Crystal Chapter president.
“He was always active in politics,” Frank Brown said. “He was a wonderful speaker.”
Brown began a second career as a traditional counselor for the tribe’s Division of Social Services, driving 130 miles to Chinle and back each day.
After that, he went on a lecture tour speaking about the Navajo Code Talkers around the country and becoming active in the Navajo Code Talkers Association, his son said.
“Dad was also a traditional practitioner, constantly learning the traditional way of life but at the same time he was always active in the Mormon Church,” Frank Brown said.
Brown is survived by his wife Loncie Polacca Brown and his children Dorothy Whilden, Preston Brown, Everett Brown, Virgil Brown and Frank Brown. His other children were the late Dale Brown and the late Ruth Ann McComb.

Phelps died in Aztec. He was born Dec. 11, 1928, in Monteliger, Idaho.
Phelps taught school for the Window Rock School District from 1966-1992. He co-owned Royal Burger in Fort Defiance.
Survivors include his sons, Hardy David Phelps, Wylie T. Phelps; daughters, Dawn Marie Sells, Mary Ellen Warren; brother, Royal Phelps; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., tonight, April 17, at Desert Memorial, Tuba City.Yazzie died April 13, 2009, in Flagstaff. He was born April 22, 1986, in Fort Defiance, into the Tangle People Clan for the Honey Comb Rock People Clan.
Yazzie attended Greasewood Boarding School, Tse ho tso Middle School, Window Rock High School, Greyhills High School and Kicking Horse Job Corps in Montana. He was working as a maintenance man at IHS, Tuba City. He enjoyed horseback riding, taming horses, powwow music, rodeos, working out, spending time with his son, family, friends and helping out others.

Julian Manuelito

Manuelito died April 10, 2009, in Phoenix. He was born Dec. 27, 1965, in Monument Valley, Utah, into the Towering House People Clan for the Mountain Cove People Clan.
Manuelito graduated from Window Rock High School in 1984. He attended Plaza Three Modeling School in Phoenix and was an AIDS Activist and Educator who spoke publicly about his experience, living with HIV to promote HIV prevention and awareness, particularly focused toward the youth, in conjunction with Navajo Nation Division of Health and the public school systems on the Navajo Nation.
Survivors include his mother, Marie A. FLAGSTAFF — Services for Cooper Ryne Johnny, 3 months old, were 10 a.m., today, Tuesday, April 7, at St. Isabell Catholic Church in Lukachukai. Burial followed.
Johnny died Friday April 3, 2009. He was born January 6, 2009 into the Red Running into the Water-Ute People Clan for the Black Streak Wood People Clan.
Johnny was a happy little boy with bright shining eyes, a crooked smile and lots of dark soft hair.
He touched so many hearts and will be greatly missed.

George was born September 27, 1933 at Concho, OK to William McKinley and Mary Susie (Antelope) Sutton. He departed this life on Monday evening, December 22, 2008 at Okeene, Oklahoma. George graduated from Canton High School in 1952, and then attended Northern Arizona University at Flagstaff for two years on an athletic scholarship. He then joined the U.S. Marine Corp and served our country during the Korean Conflict. George served one term on the Cheyenne & Arapaho tribal council and two terms on the business committee. He was one of the original founders of the Medicine Wheel Coalition for Sacred Sites of North America in 1990, and was elected the vice chairman. He kept this position until 2005 when he became the chairman of the organization. He remained chairman until his passing. George also represented the Arapaho tribe at the Medicine Lodge, KS pageant and became a chief in the early 1980’s. He currently served as the supervisor of the Howard Goodbear Wellness Center in Watonga, OK.

Bennett graduated from Window Rock High School in 1963. He entered the US Army in 1966-1969, during the Vietnam Era. He worked for Navajo Pine, Navajo Nation Division of Youth and Social Services. Bennett enjoyed bull riding, fly fishing, and hunting. He was an avid reader, a story teller, and he had a gentle nature which earned him the name Gent.

This is in memory of my Father, John Morgan Shackelford who passed away 5 years ago on February 18, 2003 in Albuquerque NM, but thankfully to the people who created this website I can let his legend live on and reconnect with those who knew him. John was born in Gallup, N.M., October 22, 1949 as a premature baby weighing 2&½ lbs. He had many back and hip problems as a kid and had to wear leg supports until about age 12. No one would have known since it seemed he was involved in football, wrestling and track. My father had a lot of accomplishments and a lot of hardships thru out his life; he was only 53 when he passed. Two brain aneurysms which put him into a coma in which he never came out of. Now I am his voice where he cannot speak and his arms where he cannot reach.John’s hobbies were reading, rock n roll and motorcycles. He was always a hard worker and dedicated to his life and even out of high school he kept his Indian culture close to him. Cherokee and Choctaw are in our bloodlines. John was passionate in all aspects of life, whether it was friends, family, learning, or working. His past jobs included, Construction Painter, sales rep, Albuquerque’s Help for the Homeless, newspaper industry, taxi cab driver in Chicago, fence builder and many other jobs in between.
Some of John’s favorite memories were when he attended St. Michael’s school where the nuns made homemade bread, fresh out of the oven with butter and honey on it. Another was sitting on John Wayne’s lap and learning to play poker as a young kid at the El Rancho Motel in Gallup N.M. with his father.
I hope anyone who knew John will open your heart to him and remember the good old days at Window Rock High School. I know in my heart he is happy and healthy and shining his light and wisdom on all of us.

Benally died July 14, 2008, in Gallup. He was born June 8, 1947, in Fort Defiance, into the Zia People Clan for the Red Running into the Water People Clan.
Benally was a lifelong resident of Fort Defiance. He graduated from Window Rock High School with honors. He received his B.S. Degree from NAU-University of Colorado, Denver, Colo. He was a medical technologist and worked with various Indian Health services throughout the Navajo Reservation. Benally also worked with the Navajo Tribe with water rights. Benally took care of elderly extended family and provided health care, voluntarily. His hobbies included reading, gardening, yard work, and spending time with people. He loved his granddaughters, and grand-nephews. He also loved traveling and his sisters and brothers.
Survivors include his=2 0brother, Nicholas Benally of Fort Defiance; sisters, Eleanor Nabahe of Shiprock, Roselyn B. Lovato of Santo Domingo.

Notah graduated from Window Rock High School in 1973. He attended Eastern Arizona College, Mesa Community College, and Eastern N.M. University. Among the jobs he had were, working in accounting at hotels, Circle K, Phoenix Area Indian Health Service, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Phoenix.
Survivors include his father, Thomas R. Notah Sr. of St. Michaels; brothers, Ferdinand Notah of Tempe, Emerson Notah of St. Michaels, Timothy Notah of Tempe, Ed Notah of St. Michaels; sisters, Jenny Notah of St. Michaels, Gloria Tom of St. Michaels, Sharon Notah-White of Albuquerque.

Cletus "Mac" Eddy , 83, of Lakeside, Arizona, passed away on May 21, 2008 at Del Webb Hospital in Sun City West, AZ. Mac was born to Elbert & Ester Eddy on October 13, 1924 in Liberty Center, Ohio. He grew up there and was a veteran of World War II in the Army Aircorp. When he returned from the war, he married his high school sweetheart Kathryn Mary Hoffer on June 30, 1947. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage until she passed away in 1997. He spent 16 years as a Journeyman Electric Lineman at Buckeye Rural Electric in Gallipolis, Ohio. He then moved his family to Window Rock, Az where he was General Manager for the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority for 9 years. He then spent 4 years working for the Navajo Tribe. In 1976 he accepted a position as General Manager for Navopache Electric Co-op in Lakeside, Az. He retired from Navopache in 1990. He is survived by his daughter Carol (Larry) Nelson of Burbank. Ca; his son Robert E (Diane) Eddy of Simsbury, CT; Granddaughter Sheri (Brant) England and his great-grandchildren Katelyn & Cody Follansbee and Jacob England of Lakeside, Az. He is also survived by his companion for the last 9 years Norma Laity of Sun City West, Az. A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Owens Mortuary, 320 N 9th Street, Show Low, Az 85901. Burial Services in be in Ohio at a later date.

WRHS Class of 1981WINDOW ROCK — Services for Willard Arthur Yellowhair, 47, were 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Community Bible Church, Tse Bonito. Pastor David Hilderman and Nelson Betony officiated. Burial was in Community Cemetery, St. Michaels.
Yellowhair died Feb. 14, 2008, in Fort Defiance. He was born Aug. 29, 1960, in Fort Defiance, into the Red Running Into the Water People Clan for the Zuni People Clan.
Yellowhair graduated from Window Rock High School in 1980 and in 1981, received a welding certificate from Crownpoint Skill Center. He was accepted into the apprenticeship program for plumbing and pipe fitting trade school in Phoenix. At the time of his death, he was a member of the United Association of Local 469 as a journeyman pipe fitter and welder.

Jones died Dec. 13, 2007 in Albuquerque. He was born March 4, 1951 in Ganado into the Charcoal Streak Division People Clan into the Red Running Into Water People Clan.
He graduated from Window Rock High School in 1969 and worked at various construction jobs in New Mexico and Arizona. Jones had his own window cleaning company in Hawaii and Colorado after military services. He served as a sergeant in the Marine Corps in the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his daughters, Crystal Jones of Grover Beach, Calif.; mother, Helen E. Jones of Window Rock; brothers, Paul Jones Jr. of Gamerco, Stewart M. Jones of Gallup, Harold J. Jones of Window Rock; sisters, Helene Grigsby of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Pauline Cardenas of Cleveland, Ohio, Cynthia Mendez of Vancouver, Wash., Gerri J. Harrison of Gallup.

Richard "Dick" MacKeen
TAHLEQUAH -- Memorial Services for Richard "Dick" MacKeen, 70, of Proctor, will be 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 22, at Grace Baptist Church in Tahlequah.
Richard was born on Sept. 22, 1937, in St. Louis, Mo., son of Richard Charles MacKeen and Virginia Barker MacKeen. He passed from this life on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, in Tahlequah.
Richard, known as "Pastor Mac," left a legacy of full-time ministry, including working with the Navajo Indians in New Mexico and Arizona. He had also worked with youth in the states of Colorado, Massachusetts, and Oklahoma; and recently had a jail ministry in Tahlequah. He was not afraid of what he believed, and shared the gospel with anyone who would listen. He loved playing games and being outdoors.
He wed Joan Carolyn Hall in Newark, Del., in 1950.
Richard is survived by his wife, Joan, of the home; daughter, Sandi Tagg and husband, Michael, of Park Hill; sons Richard P. MacKeen and wife, Mary, of Millstadt, Ill., and Robert MacKeen and his wife, Becky, of Amarillo, Texas; 17 grandchildren, including Richard Riemann of Tahlequah, whom he raised; a brother, William Mackeen and wife, Kathy, of Chesterfield, Mo.; two sisters, Sherie Clark and husband George, of Lutz, Fla., and Ginger MacKeen of Wagoner; many other friends and relatives; and loved ones too numerous to mention.

Hubbard graduated from Window Rock High School in 1968 and attended Northern Arizona University. He was employed by the Boy Scouts of America and Fred Harvey Hospitality Corporation. He was an active member of the Navajo Nation Band for 43 years.

McCabe died August 3, 2007 in Gallup. She was born November 22, 1921 in Rehoboth into the Red Running into the Water People Clan for the Red Bottom People Clan.
McCabe Worked as a Registered Nurse for the Window Rock Elementary School. She was involved with her church, Miss Navajo Pageant and served as a hostess for state and federal dignitaries. McCabe enjoyed her grand kids, being a home maker, sewing, and knitting.
Survivors include her sons, Eldon McCabe , Henry Norman McCabe, Sr. both of Window Rock,; daughter, Carol Dahozy of Chandler; brother, Henry Whipple, Jr.; sisters, Angeline Allen of Window Rock and Florence McCabe of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
McCabe was preceded in death by her husband, J. Maurice McCabe; and parents, Henry Whipple, Sr. and Christine Whipple.

Dr. Maunelle Waggoner Martin Belles, 87, passed away on Sunday, April 29, as a result of a stroke. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Maunelle was born in Lonoke, Arkansas, to John Cooke Waggoner and Nelle Dawson Waggoner. She is the sister of Betty Waggoner Mitchell.
Maunelle received her Bachelors Degree in Social Science from then-named Arkansas State Teachers College and went on to receive her Masters Degree in Education Administration from the University of Arkansas.
During World War II, Maunelle took time off from teaching to go to work at Convair in Ft. Worth, Texas. She was the only female parts inspector at that aircraft factory and got the job because of her college degree and a proficiency in math.
In 1957, she, her husband, Bill, and their daughter, Nancy, moved to Ft. Defiance, Arizona, and lived on the Navajo Indian Reservation. Bill, who passed away in 1978, was the first high school principal at Window Rock High School and later became superintendent. Maunelle taught Latin, Speech, Drama, English and Math and formed the National Thespian Society.
Maunelle continued with her education and obtained her Doctorate in Education from Arizona State University where she wrote her dissertation, Current Problems and Promising Innovations in Curriculum and Instruction. She went on to teach for 30 years at Mesa Community College and was chosen as Teacher of the Year at MCC/Mesa before her retirement. She also served two years as President of the Arizona Classroom Teachers Association and was awarded ACT’s “Outstanding Contribution in Education”. She served on National Education Association Committees.
In 1978, Maunelle received an invitation from the government of Egypt to be part of an advisory panel comprised of representatives of different professional groups. She traveled to Egypt and spent two months there, working with Egyptian officials, advising them of ways to implement changes to their educational system.
Maunelle taught for 50 years, and aside from her family, it was the overriding passion of her life. She loved to teach and could not wait to get to the classroom each day. She retired from teaching at the age of 80.
The “Dr. Maunelle Martin Memorial” scholarship has been established by her Mesa Community College associates. Contributions to this scholarship can be made out to Maricopa Colleges Foundation and mailed to:

It is with great sadness that I let you all know that our classmate, Douglas Williams, Jr. passed on from injuries after being beaten-up and robbed at a Gallup motel last month. He was hospitalized in Albuquerque and was on life-support due to a head injury.

Natonabah attended Window Rock High School. He was a member of the Native Ministry Committee for the Diocese of Arizona and Episcopal Church of Navajoland. He was a former Tribal Councilman from Ft. Defiance (1972-1983), and was a roadman for the Native American Church.
Survivors include sons, Albert Natonabah and Robert Natonabah Jr., both of Santa Fe, Christopher Natonabah of Bayfield, Colo.; daughter, Christine Natonabah of Coal Mine; sisters, Ella Jones and Helen McCabe, both of Santa Fe, Ruth Tso of Ft. Julie Ann Sherer-Luckenbaugh
It is with great sadness in my heart to inform the WR Scouts family of the passing of one of it's cherished alumni. Julie Ann Sherer-Luckenbaugh passed away at the young age of 42, on March 8, 2007 after her valiant battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, two little girls, her parents, sister, brother, nieces, nephews, and many others who love and cherish her. The Sherer family lived in Ft. Defiance in the early '70s and moved in 1978. I know WR/Ft. Defiance held a special place in Julie's heart. I met Julie when I was 8 and she 9; we were saved together by Rev. Tom Koontz at Vacation Bible School in Fort. I have many fond memories playing with Julie in the wash where the old Fort used to be. One of Julie's favorite movies is " The Phantom of the Opera", from which I dedicate to her an excerpt from one of the songs- " REMEMBER ME, FOR I'LL REMEMBER YOU!". Rest in peace my dear friend, you have and always will be in my heart!

David A. died December 18, 2006 in Mesa, AZ after a lengthy illness. He was born December 20, 1938 in Fort Defiance, AZ to Andy and Homer Folsom. He was a life long resident of the Fort Defiance, St. Michaels area.
David A. attended St. Michaels and Window Rock High School. He served two tours of duty with the United States Marine Corps in the Viet Nam conflict. He worked in Paramount, California, Anaconda Mine, and as a bookkeeper for ONEO and the Navajo Nation Dept. of Labor. He was a avid hunter and fisherman; he thoroughly enjoyed playing, coaching, and watching sports of all kinds; and spending time with family and friends.
David A. is survived by his children, David A. Folsom, Jr. and Regina Clauscheee of St.. Michaels, AZ; Daylene Renee Folsom and Wilfred Upshaw of Phoenix, AZ, Kevin Folsom and Lena Kenneth of Tempe, AZ, and Tamara Wise and Franklin Bell of Albuquerque, NM; mother Ethel A. Folsom; sisters Linda Swan of St. Michaels, AZ and Sharon Cavanaugh of Phoenix, AZ; brother Jerry Folsom of Santa Fe, NM; and he has been blessed with six beautiful grandchildren. David A. was preceded in death by his father Homer Folsom.

Sharon's battle with cancer is finally over; and life without her becomes a little less painful, a little less tearful, and a little more bearable with each passing day. Most of that easement is due to you folks, my good friends, neighbors, co-workers, and family. Your emails, phone calls, and visits have been very encouraging, supportive, and have helped tremendously. Please accept my apologies for not responding to emails individually, but my schedule is rather hectic at this time.
Funeral services for Sharon will be held at the Riverside National Cemetery next Thursday, November 9th at 10:15am, Staging area #2. The funeral will be followed by a reception at our home in Corona. And of course, everyone cc'd on this note is invited to join our family on this memorable day. Please be early to the staging area, or stop by here first, (we're leaving here at 9:00am). I've been to enough funerals there to know they are extremely prompt, and annoyingly persistent in prodding stragglers and slower groups. The cemetery does not hold funeral services on weekends or holidays, and Friday is Veteran's Day; so Thursday is the first week-day that I believe our son can make it home from Kuwait in time for the services.
I don't know if asking for an RSVP is out of line, but I'll be checking local hotel rates for those of you whom I already know are flying into town. I'll send the hotel names and rates sometime tomorrow to those who respond. I'll block a set of rooms, if they'll commit to a reasonable discount.
I look forward to seeing some of you for the first time in months, or years in some cases. I know Sharon would be pleased you joined us.

She was still talking about this even a few weeks ago, so I know it had a positive impact on her. His hobbies include Rodeo-Dine Land Senior Rodeo Association, All Indian Rodeo Association, National Barrel Horse Association, AW4D, and his hobbies reading history and western books, football and horseback riding.

Please send my condolences to the Benally family. In addition to being a friend to the Tapahe family in Fort Defiance, Delbert was a long-time community and chapter official who helped many people as a person and an organization. I had the opportunity to work with him on several occasions at the Chapter level. He was an avid horseman, and I will always remember his long pants, the back bottom ends frayed because of the length.

Joe graduated from Window Rock High School in 1975, attended Mesa Community College, Tsaile Community College, UNM-Gallup, TVI in Albuquerque and worked for NASBA, the Navajo Tribe, Navajo Arts and Crafts, Springer Sand and Gravel in Albuquerque, was a diesel mechanic, assistant manager at Thrifty Drug Store, a mechanic at Rico Motor Co. and worked at P&M Coal Mine and the Navajo Census office. His hobbies included basketball, watching Family Feud, Jay Leno and spending time with family.

During the month of September, we lost a classmate Leslie James Joe. Leslie was a 1975 Graduate from Window Rock High School. Leslie played basketball for Window Rock Scouts and was name All State, All conference and Honorable Mention during the 1973-74 and 74-75 Basketball season. Bagley died on Tuesday, May 23 in Arizona. She was born on April 20, 1950 in Rehoboth, N.M.
Bagley is survived by husband, Darrell Richard Bagley of Phoenix; parents, Arthur J. Hubbard and Ellen Hubbard; sons, Everest Wyaco and Virgil Wyaco III; daughters, Eartha Wyaco and Crystal Wyaco-Little; brothers, Arthur J. Loren Delbert Loftin
WRHS Faculty, 1960'sLoren Delbert Loftin went into the arms of Jesus April 24, 2006. He was born on February 24, 1940 in Witt Springs, Arkansas. Loren is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Patti. He is also survived by his mother, Phoebe Loftin, his two sons, Kevin and wife Sharon, and four grandchildren, of Colorado, and Darren and wife Tami and seven grandchildren, of Illinois. Loren received his undergraduate degree in education in 1963. Loren was a math teacher in the Sunnyside School District for 23 years. He served five years in the United States Air Force, receiving an honorable discharge. After retirement he and Patti served with the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program, assisting in the construction of churches and camps across the country.
Loren was a math teacher at Window Rock High School in the early 60’s. His parents, Paul and Phebe Loftin, were teachers in the elementary school at Fort in the 60’s and early 70’s.
Loren was a committed, born again Christian, who loved the Lord Jesus. For Loren, it was more than a religious relationship. It was a personal relationship with God made possible through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. Loren was an avid student of the Bible and enjoyed sharing it with others.
On May 13,, 10:00am at First Southern Baptist Church, 445 East Speedway Baptist Church, Tucson, Arizona, a Celebration of Life service will be held. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship, P.O. Box 346, Warrenton, Missouri, 63383.

Faith Marguerite Ingraham Allenegui
WRHS Class of 1981With the deepest sadness, I regret to inform you of the passing of my wife and best friend Faith Marguerite Ingraham Allenegui On May 9th at 2:30 AM
Faith was born in Monterrey, California and graduated Valedictorian Window Rock High School, Class of 1981, Fort Defiance, Arizona. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Big Sisters and joined the United States Air Force in 1987. Early in her career, as a Radio and Satellite Communications Technician she was recognized as Airman of the year for all of Korea She joined marches in the fight against AIDES, was active in the PTA, and was one of the first certified military counselors of Financial Peace University in Europe.
As a Craftsman of Information Management, she gained respect as resident expert in Computer Security for NATO Regional Headquarters of Northern Europe. Brunssum, Netherlands. Her latest duty assignment was as the training liaison for Foreign Military Sales, United States Embassy, London, England. At home, she was a beautiful and intelligent wife, an incredible nurturing Mother, avid gardener and had a sense of humor like no other.
She is survived by her husband of 16 years, currently residing at Travis Air Force Base, California Sons Jonathan of Tucson, Arizona and Elijah of Travis AFB, and Daughters, Madeline and Aimee, both of Travis AFB. Her Father, Earnest E. Ingraham of Eureka, California, and sisters Scarlett of Fairbanks Alaska, Hope Ingraham of Arcata, California, and Charity Ingraham of Alameda, California Her beloved Grandmother, Laura Ludlum, of Eureka, California, joined Faith 12 hours later. She is predeceased by her Mother Joyce E. Ingraham and Father-in-law, Duane C. Allenegui Our lives, and certainly the world, will be empty without her.

Smiley graduated from Window Rock High School in 1997. Her occupations included accounting and she was employed with cable relations in Albuquerque. Her hobbies included music, and being around friends and family.
Survivors include her parents, Jasper and Eva Smiley, of Tse Bonito; sister Melvina Smiley of Tse Bonito.
Smiley was preceded in death by her brother Melvin Jay Smiley.

Anderson died April 16 in Sawmill. He was born Sept. 30, 1945 in Fort Defiance. He was born of the Mud People for the Tangle People Clan.
Anderson graduated from Window Rock High School class of 1964, and received his BA from N.A.U. in 1985, and was working on his masters degree at W.N.M.U. He worked for BIA. At the time of death he was employed with the Navajo Nation. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, traveling, reading, rodeos, John Wayne movies and dancing.
Survivors include his wife, Velda M. Anderson of Sawmill; son, Shea I. Anderson; daughters, Kellie Yazzie, Ettie Anderson, Hollie Kulago and Carrie Anderson, all of Sawmill Ariz.; parents, Edwin B. Anderson of Window Rock and Ruth S. Benally of Fort Defiance; brothers, Ronnie Harris of Fort Defiance, and Vernon Harris; sister, Elouise Spencer, both of Phoenix, Ariz.

He graduated from Window Rock High School in 1964. He lettered in football, baseball and basketball. He was employed with D.N.A Legal Services, B.I.A Roads Dept. heavy equipment. He enjoyed coaching, playing sports and his grandchildren.
Survivors include his brother Louis Smiley of Window Rock; sisters, Alberta B. Arlington of Window Rock, Winifred Roubideaux of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kathy Scott of Window Rock and Norma J. Watts of Window Rock; 25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Karen Willie; father, Frank Smiley; mother Nora B. Smiley; sisters, Ella Mae Tom and Roselyn Smiley.

Hardy died April 3. He was born Nov. 6, 1950 in Fort Defiance into the Water's Edge Clan and born for the Towering House Clan.
Hardy attended and lettered in sports at Window Rock High School, upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Marines. and won medal awards. He was a member of the Damon Boxing team, and was an avid fisherman, enjoyed camping, hiking, he was a rancher and a member of the Twin Warriors Society and N.R.A. of America. He retired from service as a wildland firefighter with the Navajo Nation Forestry Dept. and the BIA. He was employed at the USPHS Hospital in Fort Defiance.
He is survived by his wife Sharon Hardy; sons, Brandyn Hardy and Colin Hardy; brothers, Andrew Hardy, Timothy Hardy and Wayne Hardy; sisters, Arlene Yazzie, LaCinda Hardy, and Charlene Curley and one grandchild.
Hardy was preceded in death by his father Navajo Code Talker-Tom C. Hardy; mother Helen Clark Hardy; brother's Ronald Harvey and Freddie Hardy.

Hillis graduated from Window Rock High School in 1968 and New Mexico Highlands University in 1970. He served in the Marines during Vietnam and received a Purple Heart. He joined the IBEW with Local 640 and retired with Local 611. He owned Hillis Electric. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, horseback riding and farming.
Survivors include his son Clyde Hillis II of Fort Defiance; daughters, Autumn Hillis, Iris Hillis, both of Fort Defiance, Amber Hillis of Tacoma, Wash.; mother, Katherine Hillis of Fort Defiance; brothers, Carl Hillis, Mervyn Hillis, both of Fort Defiance, and Russell Hillis of Phoenix; sisters, Alberta Scarcella of Jerome, Ariz., Lydia Bennett of Flagstaff; and one grandchild.

My condolences to the Clyde Hillis family.
I went to school with Clyde for a number of years, and what I remember of him, was, he always had a smile, and a good word for everyone. He was One of the Good Ones. He will be missed.

Clyde was a Gentleman in the finest definition of the word. He was a Decorated Vietnam Veteran, a Successful Businessman, a caring father and a loyal and genial friend. Clyde was a big person, with a big heart who was respected not only for what he did, but for the respect he showed to all around him.
I spent more time with Clyde and his family than I did with my own during my time in Ft. Defiance. I feel I am a better person for that experience.
The Hillis family as a whole is a very special group of people and Clyde was a very important part of that family. His passing leaves us all a little poorer. His having been with us all of these years has made us all a little richer.
May God Bless Mrs. Hillis and her Children and may God Bless my brother Clyde.

Clyde was in my brothers class and Carl was in mine, but they are a great family and I came to know, love and respect these boys. Great personalities and a lot of fun. My deepest condolences to the family of Clyde Hillis. I remember him as student at WRHS and he was very good football player and earned All-State wrestler. He became a Marine and went to Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart.
I had the privilege of Sun Dancing with him at Crow Dog's Paradise in Rosebud, South Dakota during the early 1980's.
Clyde was a friend and a relative who will be missed by all who knew him and we grieve with his family.

Claudia Dugan was kind enough to contact me and tell me the sad news of Clyde's passing. I can't remember not knowing Clyde, Mervyn, and Carl. When we were all little kids we already knew each other and were friends. Janet Benally, Herman Fredenberg, Chubbie Manuelito, Clyde, Beverly Bennett, and later Charlie Parks, and I used to have such a great time in Ft. Defiance. Some friendships truly do last a lifetime.
Clyde will be dearly missed. What a great smile and wonderful friend! Although our hearts are heavy, we are comforted with beautiful memories of past times. We have all been blessed by knowing him.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Hillis family and friends.

Faculty, Industrial Education WRHS1962-1972Just to let you everyone on the web site of WR, Daddy (Larry Lee) went to be with the Lord Monday the 20th of March, first day of spring as it was gently snowing in Prescott. He died at exactly 12:00 PM with all three of us girls and Mom at his side. His private burial is Friday 9:30 AM at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix. His Memorial Service, a celebration of his 84 years is at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church in Prescott, this Saturday, March 26th. Anyone who would like to come to the Memorial is welcome. Flowers are welcomed, or if you would prefer there has been set up a loving memorial to my Dad. In lieu of flowers, you can send a check to my mom but make it out to First Baptist Church, for Missions and Missionaries. His passion and desire was for all to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and His grace for all mankind. Mom's address is: Mrs. Willie Lee, 352 Pioneer Dr, Prescott, AZ 86303. No one needs to feel any obligation to give any thing. This is just info for those who would want to.
Thank you for all the letters, calls, and visits from all over the state and from Ft. Defiance. How our hearts were blessed and encouraged by your loving thought and cards. We rest assured he is in the presence of the Lord and no longer in any pain or stress.

Lawrence "Larry" Lee
Lawrence "Larry" Lee, a 33-year resident of Prescott, died at his home on March 20, 2006, of leukemia. He was born in Tucson on Oct. 30, 1921, to Monroe and Leona (Wilson) Lee. He grew up in Los Angeles, Calif.
Mr. Lee served in the Pacific in World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corps. A master craftsman, he was a journeyman in the sheet metal trade and earned a Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, and Education Specialist from NAU.
For 10 years, Mr. Lee taught vocational arts at Window Rock High School in Fort Defiance, Ariz. In 1973, he joined the faculty of Yavapai College as a teacher and career counselor.
He is survived by his wife and best friend of 60 years, Willie Brown Lee; three daughters, Susan Powell, of Prescott, Paula Mahon, of Cottonwood, and Jan Winebrenner, of Plano, Texas. He was also the grandfather of six and the great-grandfather of twelve.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at the Prescott First Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Larry Lee Memorial Fund, c/o Prescott First Baptist Church.
Hampton Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

I don't have much info. I spoke to a classmate who informed me of the passing of my favorite teacher Kerry Larimore. She lived in Kansas and apparently passed in her sleep sometime last week. If anyone has anymore info please let us know.

Ellouise D. DeGroat
It is with great sorrow and sadness that the Navajo Nation has lost a beloved health care ambassador to the Navajo people. On December 6, 2005, Ellouise D. DeGroat died in Fort Defiance, Arizona. She was 66 years old.
Ellouise is remembered as a health care ambassador who traveled throughout the United States advocating for the Navajo people to address health care disparities and wellness. She worked a majority of her professional life with the Navajo Area Indian Health Service serving as a Tribal Affairs Officer in Window Rock, Arizona.
In her years of service, she served as a tribal liaison between the Indian Health Service and the Navajo Nation Government. She helped to create the Department of Health Improvement Service (DHIS) which today is now known as Navajo Division of Health (NDOH) She assisted the Navajo Nation Government to craft health care codes for the betterment of the Navajo people. She retired from the Indian Health Service in December 1993.
Throughout her life, she served on numerous boards and advisory councils, such as the Fort Defiance Hospital Steering Committee, National Indian Health Board, National Indian Education Association, St. Michaels Special Education Association, Window Rock Unified School District Governing Board, Christian Reformed Church, to name but a few.
She is survived by her beloved husband Jack DeGroat; daughters Laura Tewksbury, Joquetta DeGroat, and Joycetta DeGroat; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; Sisters Rosaline Kaibetoney and Leita Pinto. Ellouise was preceded in death by her mother Mae W. Dennison and sister Garnett D. Yazzie.
Funeral arrangements will be made with Rollies Mortuary, Gallup, New Mexico. Family meetings and final arrangements will be listed through the local newspaper and radio stations.

Candy White Williams
My fellow Scouts, my dear friend, George White, has witnessed his sister, Candy White Williams, passing to the next life. She had severe health complications and was carefully cared for by George and his family members.
Candy put an indelible mark on the lives she touched and will be missed ; although her memory will live on in the hearts, spirits and minds of those who remain. Her spark of humor and undeniable love of life shone through her relationships and any time spent with her made one feel a supreme exhilaration and thrill of life at it's best.

ALBUQUERQUE - Dan Magnuson class WRHS1977 was killed by a drunk driver on November 23, 2005.Contributed by Sean Callan
A cab driver and two passengers died early Thursday after their taxi collided with another car that had run a red light, Albuquerque police said. The Thanksgiving Day crash killed Daniel Magnuson, the 46-year-old cab driver, and passengers Ray Martinez, 50, and his cousin, 36-year-old Kenneth Martinez.
Police identified the driver of the other car, a white Oldsmobile, as Gabriel Gurule, 21, of Northeast Albuquerque.

FORT DEFIANCE — Memorial services for Elton Ray Bailey, 79, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Rio Grande Presbyterian Church, 600 Coors N.W., Albuquerque. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Bailey died Oct. 11 in Nova Scotia. He was born July 25, 1926, in Wedowee, Ala
Bailey received his bachelors from Auburn University and his masters in education. He was a teacher of sciences and horticulture at Tse Ho Tso Middle School and Albuquerque Indian School. Bailey was a member of the Elks Lodge and enjoyed gardening, and traveling the world.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Hurt Bailey; son, Michael Ray Bailey of San Diego, Calif.; daughters, Marsha E. Smith of Navajo, Margaret Ann Aviles of Hinkley, Calif.; step-daughter, Susan Sotelo of Rio Rico, Ariz.; brothers, Malcom Bailey; sisters, Sara Bartlett, Mavis Gilbert, Dorothy Mooney; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Bailey was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe Conklin and Frances Jeanette Bailey; brothers, Talmadge Bailey, Terrel Bailey, Glynn Bailey, Byron Bailey; sisters, Eudelle and Ermice.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Rio Grande Presbyterian Church following burial services.

Robert E. McLemore
Funeral services for Robert E. McLemore, 80, were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 23 at the Presbyterian Church in Fort Defiance. Roger Davis, Jr. officiated. Burial followed at the Veterans Cemetery in Fort Defiance.
McLemore died July 20 in Fort Defiance. He was born May 20, 1925 in Barber, Oklahoma.
McLemore retired after 30 years of service with the federal government. He was a member of the N.R.A. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing musical instruments.
Survivors include his wife, Marian McLemore; sons, Marvin McLemore, Milo McLemore, Norman McLemore, Glen McLemore, Bobby Ray Kelly; daughters, Paula Holmes, Carol McLemore, Kim Martinez, Roberta McLemore; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
McLemore was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lillie McLemore; one brother and two sisters.

My Uncle Leigh should have been known to many of the alumni. He worked for the Navajo Forest Products Industry up at Navajo for many years. All of his children, my cousins, went to WRHS.
The funeral is on Saturday, April 30, 10:00am at the Fort Defiance Presbyterian Church.

To those who wish to know, our office received information that Mr. Leigh P. Hubbard, Sr., who once served as the president of the Fort Defiance Hospital Steering Committee, has passed away. Memorial service is scheduled on April 30, 2005.
Mr. Hubbard was the first president of the Steering Committee who relentlessly worked to secure support for the new Fort Defiance Hospital. He delivered the first testimony before the Senate Committee on Appropriations in 1984 requesting support for construction of the new hospital to provide high quality health care to the Navajo people in the Fort Defiance Service Unit. At that meeting he boldly told the Chairperson of the committee, "I know you will take care of us"!
He was a true leader and he will be dearly missed.

Dr. Samuel Billison
FORT DEFIANCE — Dr. Samuel Billison, 79, died Nov. 17 in Fort Defiance. Billison was born March 14, 1925 in Ganado.
Dr. Billison graduated from Albuquerque Indian School. He obtained his associate degree from Bacone Junior College, Okla., his Bachelors of Arts from East Central State University, Ada, Okla., his Masters of Arts from Oklahoma University and his Doctorate of Education from the University of Arizona, Tucson. Dr. Billison has the distinction of being the first Navajo of the Navajo Tribe to earn a doctorate. He was a certified K-12 teacher, principal and superintendent. He taught in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Dr. Billison was a high school principal in Oklahoma and Texas; Principal of Kinlichee Boarding School; Agency Superintendent for 11 Bureau of Indian Affairs elementary schools in Fort Defiance; head Master of Navajo Academy, and Principal of Ganado Middle School. He taught at Florida State University, Arizona State University and the University of Arizona. Dr. Billison was an officer of Sage Memorial Hospital Board of Directors.
Dr. Billison served on the Navajo Nation Council for two terms in his home chapter Kinlichee. The first term he was elected in 1960 and served four years. He was chairman of the Navajo Police Committee and a member of the Education Committee during that term. The second term he was elected in 1998, member of the Education Committee and completed his term recently in Jan. 2003.
Dr. Billison, most notably, served as President of the Navajo Code Talkers Association. He served in the US Marine Corps, Reconnaissance Company, 5th Marine Division and participated in the capture of Iwo Jima. He also served in the Occupational Forces in Japan after WWII. He has been instrumental in obtaining national recognition of the Navajo Code Talkers and traveled widely on their behalf making presentations to various organizations on how the code developed and was used in World War II. Dr. Billison provided the voice of a GI Joe Code Talker action figure and donated the proceeds to the Navajo Code Talkers Association.
Dr. Billison is survived by his wife, Patsy Billison; sons, Samuel Billison, Jr., Robert Billison, John Billison, Larry Billison, Steve Billison and his seven grandchildren.

Henry Arch ‘Hank’ Elliott, Jr.
September 3, 1926 – August 18, 2004
Henry Arch Elliott, Jr., age 77, died Wednesday, August 18, 2004, in Duncan, Oklahoma. Masonic graveside services were held August 23, 2004, in Jones, Oklahoma.
Hank was born September 3, 1926, in Hominy, Oklahoma, to Lettie Young Elliott and Henry Arch Elliott, Sr. He was married to Margie M. Fowler for 23 years. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Nina R. Adams Elliott.
He joined the U.S. Navy in June of 1944. He was honorably discharged after serving two years in the Seabees, stationed primarily in the Philippine Islands. Following his discharge, he joined the Los Angeles County District Council of the Carpenters and Joiners of America. In January of 1949, Mr. Elliott was hired by the newly formed Atomic Energy Commission Protection Force in Los Alamos, New Mexico, beginning a 35 year long career in federal and state law enforcement.
In addition to the Atomic Energy Commission, he worked for: Los Alamos Police Department; New Mexico State Police; Bureau of Indian Affairs, serving in New Mexico (Shiprock, Zuni, and Mascalero) and Window Rock, Arizona. In 1975, he began teaching for the Department of Treasury at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, Georgia. He was still teaching when he retired March 31, 1980.
Unable to leave law enforcement behind, he continued to teach Criminal Justice Studies at Trinidad Community College in Colorado and various state and local police schools and academies, as well as maintaining his certification in Police Firearms Instruction.
He was a Presbyterian and a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. He was active in the Masonic Lodge, joining in New Mexico in 1950, then serving as Master in Kettle Falls, Washington, in 1982. During his time in Kettle Falls, 1981-1984, he built a beautiful log house.
Survivors include his wife, Nina, of the home; his daughter, Oleta Elliott, Mesa, Arizona; two grand-daughters, Charmain S. Hopkins, Chandler, Arizona, and Dawna M. Floyd, Conifer, Colorado; and one great-grandson, Donovan D. Floyd, Conifer, Colorado; and a host of other nieces, nephews, and relatives.
Memorial donations may be made to the Shriners’ Crippled Children’s Hospitals or to the Stable Ranch for Boys, Rt.. 1, Box 205, Waukomis, OK 73775.

Day died July 26 in Gallup. He was born May 4, 1960, in San Pedro, Calif.
Day graduated from Window Rock High School in 1978 and went on to attend Arizona State University. He was on the Board of Toyie Industries, which his father created. Day was member of the Elks Lodge, Gallup.
Survivors include his mother, Dolores Greene of Gallup; daughter LaTasha Day of Mesa; brothers, Wayne Day of Blanding, Utah, Steven Day of Bloomfield; grandmother, Frances Greene of Gallup.
Day was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Edward Day III, grandfathers, Sam A. Day, II and John B. Greene.

ST. MICHAELS, AZ - Services for Kyle Lee Hale, 22, will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 28 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Lupton. President Dedegen Bushman will officiate. Burial will be on family land in Oak Springs.
Hale died July 23 in Tulsa, Okla. He was born May 24, 1982 in Fort Defiance.
Hale graduated from Window Rock High School, were he received numerous awards including National Honor Society, U.S. Achievement Academy Award, All American Scholar, Navajo Times Wrestling Award, State Champion Wrestler for Arizona in class 3A, he also participated in football. Hale attended Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa. He worked for North Star, Gallatin, Tenn., and Basil in Tulsa, Okla. His hobbies included listening to music and hunting.
Survivors include his parents, Cindy Hale and Ray Price both of Oak Springs; brother, Cameron Burbank of Oak Springs; sisters, Shalan Hale, Tanya Burbank and Amanda Burbank, all of Oak Springs.
Hale was preceded in death by his grandfather, Hoskie L. Hale and grandmother, Sarah T. Hale.

Gene Roy Hawthorne
LUPTON, Ariz., - Services for Gene Hawthorne, 48, will be at 10 a.m. (MST), Tuesday, May 18 at the Tse Si Ani Missionary Baptist Church in Lupton. Pastor Regan Hawthorne and Dr. R.O. Hawthorne will officiate. Burial will follow on family land, Lupton.
Hawthorne died May 11 in Brawley, Calif. He was born April 11, 1956 in Fr. Campbell, Ky., for the Red House People Clan.
Hawthorne graduated from Chinle High School in 1975 and served with the U.S. Army Northern Warfare Training Center in Ft. Greely, Alaska and with the 7th Infantry Division. He received commendations citing expertise, leadership and influence on others. He was a steel worker and welder and his hobbies included spending time in the outdoors and scouting. At the time of his death he lived in San Felipe, Baja, California, Mexico.
Survivors include his daughter Geneifer; son Jared, both of Delanco, N.J.; parents, Dr. and Mrs. R.O. Hawthorne of Lupton; brothers Jerry Hawthorne of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Regan Hawthorne of Lupton, Charles Blackburn of Nashville, Tenn.; sister Ann Galya of Nashville and one grandchild.

This is a very difficult time to bring about sad news to the class of 1968, we have lost a friend, uncle, Mr. Willie Francis passed on April 20th from cancer. The family has set Friday, 23rd for burial.
TOMLINSON -- Thomas Emery Tomlinson has moved on to the next phase. Tom was born on Friday, June 21, 1940 in Libby, MT and died of an illness on Monday, April 20, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM. In between those years, he lived a full and productive life. He grew up and attended schools in numerous logging camps in Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. He often told of many a morning when he woke up on the back of a pick up while his parents moved the whole family to a new logging camp. In 1960, after high school, he joined the United States Air Force and served stints in North Africa and Vietnam, where he received a Bronze Star. He left the service in 1968 to explore challenges as a civilian. He was a major player at McReynolds Construction in the 70's until 1984 when he became a Co-owner and General Manager of RHOMBUS Engineers and Consultants. He immersed himself in politics and became Horse Racing Commission Chairman and a big presence during Governor Toney Anaya's administration. His greatest joy was being surrounded by his family whether on the banks of the waters of Platoro, CO or in the family backyard. He cultivated deep and meaningful relationships and considered his friends an extension of his loving family. He was extremely generous of his heart and possessions. He worked hard and played hard. Tom is survived by his wife of 35 years, Celia Ruiz Tomlinson; sons Michael David Tomlinson of St. Louis, MO and Thomas Clay Tomlinson and his wife, Ana Andzic Tomlinson, of Albuquerque; daughter Michele Andrews of Albuquerque; sister Trisha Towsley of Visalia, CA; brothers Joseph Clay Tomlinson of Tucson, AZ, Michael Tomlinson of Lake Havasu, AZ, and Gary Hubbard of Albuquerque; grandchildren Christopher, Jonathan, Zachary, Krystal, and Hanna. My brother Thomas Emery Tomlinson was born in 1940 and passed on this a.m. in 2004 -- he is truly resting in a better place after several months of a hard fight for life -- He was the brother we all dream of having and more -- the love that came from this man was unmatchable -- he left us children that are precious and awesome to just hang with -- should you have been fortunate to have been a friend of Tommy's overjoyed in his love the same as a family member, totally unyielding of your personal faults -- once you had Tommy's love you were never the same person !!

He was the first Leap Year baby at the Chandler Regional Medical Center. Big brother Elijah Justice is totally thrilled about his new baby brother!!. It is with deep regret that I must inform those alumni members who are interested that Amelia and Denise Haven were killed in a car accident on January 1, 2004. Their funerals have been set for Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at the First Methodist Church in Gallup, NM @ 11:00 am. They will both be buried at the Sunset Memorial Park also located in Gallup. A reception will be held immediately after the the First Baptist Church in Tse Bonito, NM.
Amelia was the wife of Leo Haven who was a WRUSD Governing Board member in the late 1960's to the early 1970's. She was also the mother of ten graduates of WRHS and was truly a die hard "Fighting Scout" fan and supported her children in all their activities while in high school. She is survived by nine children, thirty-one grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Four of her children currently work for the WRUSD and still keep close ties with the school district.
Denise Haven graduated from WRHS in 1975 and is survived by her two children who are also graduates of WRHS. The families are asking for any financial donations you may be able to provide. We appreciate your prayers and support and realize what an impact these two ladies provided to a lot of people in our communities. Paul Natonabah passed away in Flagstaff, Arizona on February 12, 2003. Paul was the brother of Dorothy Natonabah Saucedo, Ella Natonabah Jones and Robert Natonabah, Sr. All graduated from WRHS.
Born on November 8, 1941, Paul graduated from WRHS in 1961. He was a member of the Student Council his senior year and served as a class officer for three years. Paul was a member of the Letterman's Club and participated in Track and Field, Football, Basketball, and Baseball. He was also a member of the choir.
Paul was drafted into the US Army Corp in 1966, with the 1st Cavalry Division Airmobile Unit. He received the Vietnam Combat Certificate, the Air Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. Paul was honorably discharged in 1970.

Warren O. Cordes, at the age of 80 went to be with the Lord on January 15, 2003. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a dedicated member of the communities where he lived. Warren was a native of Arizona, born March 22, 1922 in Mayor, AZ. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth E. Evans, three daughters Janet Polasky husband Paul of Wayne, PA; Mitzie Cordes Heydt husband Bob of Gilbert, AZ; and Laura Rogers husband Lynn of Springerville, AZ; 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, sister Edna Warren and brothers’ Henry and Calvin Cordes. Warren is a veteran of WWII where he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was a farmer/stockman all his life. He retired from the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest in 1984. He served on the Apache County Farm Bureau, Fair Commission, Soil Conservation boards; and was active in youth organizations of 4 H and FFA throughout his adult life. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Arizona 4 H Foundation, P.O. Box 210036, Tucson, AZ 85721, or the Arizona Agricultural Education/FFA Foundation, 1303 E. FRANK A. "BUD" WEAVER III, born July 27, 1932 in Houston, Texas to Frank A. Weaver Jr. and Grace Causey Weaver, died December 7, 2002 in his home in Kingwood, Texas at the age of 70. Mr. Weaver served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. For 20 years he worked for George Weaver Inc., custom home builders in Kingwood and The Woodlands. He was an outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting, and as a member of Kingwood Country Club, he also enjoyed golfing. In his youth he played basketball, baseball and football, and in recent years still liked watching sports. But his real passion was his family, for whom he had infinite patience and always a good ear for listening. Mr. Weaver is survived by his wife of 52 years, "Betty" Weaver; mother, Grace Weaver; daughter, Kimberly A. Koch, her husband, Richard and their children, Ashley and James Koch; sons, Robert A. Weaver, his wife, Lynne and their daughter, Katherine Nicole Weaver, and Terry F. Weaver, his wife, Michelle and their children, Terry Jr., Christopher, Ryan, and Cierra Weaver; sister, Joann Weaver Grose and her husband Dayle; and brother, George Causey Weaver and his wife, Debbie. Friends may call at Kingwood Funeral Home Tuesday, December 10, 2002 after 3:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Kingwood Funeral Home with the Reverend T. WRHS Booster ClubJoanne Speicher, mother to Jim, Billy, Jill, Joan and Susie, passed away at 1:30 am November 13, 2002. Jim, Joan and Susie were with her. Prayers are requested for the family.
Joanne Speicher was a very active parent at WRHS from 1961 80. She put together the parent Booster Club, an organization to promote parent involvement in all team sports at away and home games. Through that club, the Judd Avey Award and Sports Banquet was founded. The award was given to the student who personified sportsmanship and the award was in memory of Avey as the ultimate coach soon after is death. The Booster Club had many fund raisers to supplement road trips, and other sports needs not met by the school. I can still see my mom and dad in the bleachers yelling "huba huba, big blue!" My folks loved the school, the kids, and the reservation.Both Joanne and Bill served on the School Board and Bill organized the donation of the school's victory bell, for the Class of 1965 who purchased it, from the Santa Fe railroad. (The bell was still around when I graduated in 1980, don't know if its still around.)
Mom made millions of cupcakes for many a bake sale for her cheerleading daughters and built many floats for homecoming!! She even designed a float or two for the Booster club.
Through all of this she sold Avon Products, coached baseball, delivered newspapers, and was a friend and second mother to many. After twenty years of dedication to WRHS, I can only hope to be half as successful in my own children's lives.
Rest in peace. I will keep your spirit alive!!

Ted L. Belles, a resident of Phoenix since 1964, passed away October 18, 2002. Born in Blakesberg, Iowa, September 22, 1926, he had a long career with Bankers Life & Casualty Insurance Company and in recent years had worked as an insuracne broker.
A World War II veteran, Ted served in the Pacific Theater of Operations as a bomber pilot in the U.S. Navy and received numerous awards for meritorious service including the Air Medal and the Distinquished Flying Cross.
Survivors include his wife, Maunelle W. Belles; three sons: Mark David, Mitchell Walker, and Steven Patrick; two daughters: Carol Williams and Nancy Rikel (Yorba Linda, CA); a sister: Bonnie Seager (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa), a brother, Lawrence W. (Rochester, NY); seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Services for Harrison Naswood, 62, will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament, Fort Defiance. Burial will follow at Fort Defiance Cemetery.
Naswood died Sept. 5 in Fort Defiance. He was born Feb. 3, 1940, in Chinle, Ariz., into the Edgewater People Clan for the Tangle People Clan.
Naswood attended Window Rock High School and Baylor Business College, Dallas Texas. He was employed with the Navajo Nation Purchasing Department. He was a former athlete, referee and champion bull rider.
Survivors include his sons, Elton Naswood of Los Angeles, Calif., Elmer Naswood, Elbert Naswood, and Elroy Naswood all of Fort Defiance; daughters, Evangeline Naswood of Mesa, Ariz., and Evangelita Samora of Pueblo, Colo.; brother, Wilson Naswood of Fort Defiance, Ariz.; sisters, Louise Naswood of Chinle, Ariz., and Judy Armstrong of Whiteriver, Ariz., and three grandchildren.
Naswood was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus Naswood and Yanabah Naswood and son, Eldon Ebba Naswood.
The family will receive friends and relatives after the burial services at Saint Dominic Hall, Fort Defiance.
Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

WRHS Class of 1976Brian Callan died September 1, 2002 in Phoenix.
Brian was a 1976 Window Rock High School Graduate. He was an accomplished and recognized student athlete.
Brian was a retired Chief Warrant Officer II U.S.M.C. He was awarded numerous academic and athletic honors and received medals of distinction from serving in Granada, Panama, Beirut, Gulf War, and Somalia. Brian was an avid reader and a compassionate human being who served others. He was a loving son, brother, father and grandfather.
Brian is survived by: son Michael J. T. Callan; daughter Cheryl J.Y. Callan; parents mother Jerri Glover; father Laurence B. Callan; brothers Sean Patrick Callan, Peter Gerald Callan, Timothy Mark Callan, and Christopher Robert Callan; maternal grandmother Eileen Glover; and two grandchildren Seandeen Elizabeth Callan and Bahazhonii Dawn Callan. Callan was also preceded in death by a maternal grandfather Billy Glover and paternal grandparents Laurence Joseph and Ceciela Callan.

FORT DEFIANCE, Ariz. — Services for Lennie Reynolds Sr., 55, will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 5 at Fort Defiance Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the private family cemetery, Sawmill, Ariz.
Reynolds died Aug. 31 in Fort Defiance. He was born Sept. 7, 1946 in Fort Defiance into the Mud People Clan for the One Who Walks Around You People Clan.
Reynolds graduated from Window Rock High School and attended vocational school in Oakland, Calif. and Lawrence, Kan.
He was employed with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Navajo Nation, Navajo Housing Authority, Navajo Tribal Utility Authority, carpenter's union, soil conservation service as a soil conservationist, a range technician, range rider, electrician apprentice and carpenter. His hobbies included rodeos and ranching. He was a former member of the All Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association (AIRCA).
Survivors include his wife, Carol J. Reynolds of Fort Defiance; son, Lennie R. Reynolds Jr. of Fort Defiance; daughter, Lynette K. Reynolds of Fort Defiance; brother, Jimmy Tsosie of Sawmill, Ariz.; sisters, Ruth S. Benally of Fort Defiance and Lillian S. Mitchell of Sawmill; and four grandchildren. Reynolds Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, Alchidesbah and Hoskie Jim Tsosie; and Mabel S. Bennett.

God took the strength of a mountain The majesty of a tree The warmth of a summer sun The calm of a quiet sea The generous soul of nature The comforting arm at night The wisdom of the ages The power of the eagles' flight Then God combined these qualities His masterpiece was now complete I've lovingly called him Keith Keith passed peacefully at home at the age of 55 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was born June 17, 1947 to Charlotte and George J. Herzog in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married his best friend and constant companion, Evelyn Reed Herzog, Sept. 16, 1969.
Keith had a long sales career where he made numerous friends. He was employed by ADT at the time of his passing.
Boating, ice hockey, scuba diving, sky diving, riding his Harley Davidson, and most of all, his dedication to the game of golf, were some of his favorite pastimes that he enjoyed doing with family and friends. His charm, genuineness and beautiful head of hair will be remembered by all as trademarks of Keith. He was very proud of his "Wings at 16" trophy presented for attaining a pilot's license before he earned his driver's license. At age of 19 he found sky diving, a sport he treasured in the innermost part of his soul, logged more than 450 jumps and made numerous long standing friends. He enjoyed boating with Evelyn. They began with a small sail boat, which led to a cabin cruiser, the Gee Gee III, where fishing and water skiing were favorites.
His passion for golf and love of travel led him to invent and design a golf travel bag under the company name of The Golf Travel Bag. In 1985 he joined Hidden Valley Country Club, where he enjoyed countless rounds of golf with Evelyn and friends.
His FXR became his last sport he loved riding as well as showing which gave him great pleasure. His bike received four First Place Trophies and one Best Overall Paint Trophy.
He will be missed by all family members and friends whose lives he touched.
Left behind are his most priceless treasures: Evelyn (Fred) of Salt Lake City; mother, Charlotte Herzog of Price, Utah; sisters Christine (Jerry) Hurd, Port Sydney, Canada; Coleen Herzog and brother Scott (Laury) both of Price, Utah; numerous loving in laws; innumerable friends and best "Little friend" five year old Nicholas Story, who shared every outdoor chore, Hockey and especially motorcycle riding. "Niki, I wish you the very best life offers and all your dreams realized." He was preceded in death by sister Karen (infant) and father George J. Herzog.
Keith courageously fought to stay with us and humbly accepted a greater will. A husband, son, brother and friend, we have not lost. Rather, we welcome to be blessed by his presence in life's journey onward.
Keith Fenton, may all your drives be straight, all your putts drop and your Harley Davidson never run out of gas God Speed.
A farewell service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday June 29, 2002 at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City. Friends are invited to join the family for hugs and last goodbyes, Friday evening from 6 8 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to the service. Dedication of grave will be at Larkin Sunset Lawn immediately following the service.
Special thanks to the many close friends, neighbors, relatives, doctors, and nurses for their love and support as they served Keith.

Dr. Fred, a well known and well loved local dentist affectionately known as the Tooth Shaman, died March 17, 2002, from complications following a successful liver transplant on February 5th. Fred was born Herman Charles Fredenberg III in Keshena, WI on 11/16/49, a member of the Menominee Nation. He was the oldest of 9 children born to Herman II and Pauline Wychesit Fredenberg. Fred was an exceptional man and a born athlete. He lettered in every sport in high school at Window Rock, AZ by the time he graduated in 1968. He also won the prestigious Jud Avey Sportsmanship Award his senior year. He attended the University of New Mexico on a full scholarship to play football, being honored as a Sports Illustrated Player of the Week.

But Fred wasn’t just an athlete, he was also a scholar, winning a Kellog Scholarship to attend the University of Kentucky Dental School where he completed a four year program in just three years. Fred is the second American Indian in the country to become a dentist and was a long time member of the Society of American Indian Dentists. Fred moved to Alaska in 1974 to fill a short term position for the Public Health Service at the ANS hospital. Like many of us, he fell in love with Alaska and never left. He started a private practice in Anchorage which he maintained until May of last year when he moved his practice to his family farm in Palmer, Alaska.
Fred was a strong, gentle, kind, generous and loving soul. A man with a genuinely good spirit who touched all who crossed his path. He is a man who will be deeply missed by his many patients, friends and extended family. Fred’s death is a tragic loss to our world, but he creates a bright light in the heavens which must comfort and inspire us all. Fred leaves behind his soul mate and wife, Connie Fredenberg, and eight lovely young people who are proud and blessed to have called him father and stepfather. Five children: Sean Irvin, Tecumseh Fredenberg, Satanta Fredenberg, and Dorthy Wychesit Fredenberg of Anchorage; Nakatla Fredenberg of Ada, Oklahoma. Three stepchildren: Grace and Othniel Oomittuk of Pt. Hope, Alaska; and Kayuktuq Oomittuk of Palmer. There are also three grandchildren: Jared and Sarah Rose Oomittuk of Pt. Hope and Justin Leigh of Ada, Oklahoma. Fred is survived by his four brothers: Jim and wife Veronica of San Diego, CA; Lacey and wife Bunni of Gallup, NM; David and partner Rusty Stechman and brother Tom of Tuscon, AZ and his two sisters: Clara and husband Mark Darby of Mesa, AZ; Denise and husband Orin Kettering of Gallup, NM. Fred’s large extended family includes many cousins, nieces and nephews scattered throughout the Southwest and on the Menominee Reservation in Wisconsin. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Dennis and Craig and nephew Dennis Joseph.

Mrs. A. C. Rudeau, mother of Diane, passed away during the Christmas Holidays, 2001.
Patrick H. NelsonPatrick H. Nelson 81, of Mesa AZ, died on December 30, 2000. Born March 17, 1919 in Portal, North Dakota, Patrick served in the US Army in Italy during WWII. After the war, he began his police career in law enforcement with the Minneapolis Police Department in 1947. During the 1950's & 60's, he was the Chief of Police of the Navajo Nation. He was President of the Arizona Police Chiefs Association and held office in the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He finished his career as Police Chief in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings. He is survived by Betty; eight sons; three daughters; 22 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.
